What UK law expects from supply and install RAMS

UK health and safety law does not require supply and install businesses to produce a document called a RAMS for every job. It does require employers and contractors to assess risks, introduce suitable controls and communicate safe working arrangements to the people carrying out, supervising or affected by the work.

For delivery, unloading, positioning, installation, testing and handover, the RAMS should reflect the product being supplied, the customer site, the access route, the equipment being used and the conditions surrounding the installation.

Key requirements for supply and install RAMS

MHSWR 1999 Requires suitable and sufficient risk assessments, appropriate controls and reviews when the scope, work method or site conditions change.
CDM Regulations 2015 May apply where installation, replacement or refurbishment forms part of construction work. Contractors must plan, manage and monitor their work and consider anyone who may be affected.
Work at Height Regulations 2005 Applies where installation teams use ladders, towers, scaffolds, roof access, platforms or other equipment where a fall could cause injury. The work must be properly planned, supervised and completed by competent people.
PUWER and LOLER 1998 Apply to work equipment and lifting equipment used for unloading, moving and positioning products. Equipment must be suitable, and lifting operations must be properly planned, supervised and carried out safely.
Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 Require hazardous manual handling to be avoided where reasonably practicable, assessed where it cannot be avoided and reduced through suitable equipment, planning and controls.
